DVD with full version (18 min.) and short version (7 min.)
Excessive algae on the shores of Lake Michigan can ruin a trip to the beach. It also blunts tourism spending, lowers property values, and clogs industrial water intake pipes. The costs add up to millions of dollars each year. This video features interviews with beachgoers, lakeshore property owners and coastal residents about the problem, and it turns to biologist Harvey Bootsma of the UW Great Lakes WATER Institute for an explanation of the science behind the stink. The short version is indexed by topics for quick access to information about the causes of the problem, the role of invasive mussels and phosphorus, and what can be done to clean up Lake Michigan’s beaches.
