The UW Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering presented the seven-part lecture series: "Will the Well Run Dry? Ground Water Management in Wisconsin."  Some scientists and resource managers are concerned that groundwater shortages may occur in Wisconsin in the future.  Since half of Wisconsin's residents get their drinking water from groundwater and groundwater is a critical source of water for the state's streams, lakes and wetlands, shortages would cause hardship and major public policy problems.

In 1964 a huge earthquake caused tsunamis to hit the Alaska coastline, killing more than one hundred people. The first part, "The Struggle," shows how people cope with water-rich and water-poor environments.   The second, "The Energy," deals with the use of water for power over time. The third, "The Myths," concentrates on the importance of water in myth and religion from the Vikings to modern times.  In the fourth part, "The Conflicts," the future of cooperation or conflict over water in the lives of humans everywhere is discussed. 17,000 years ago, a glacier near Missoula, Montana blocked rivers, making an inland sea with a 3,000-square-mile surface area.  This Glacial Lake Missoula eventually broke free, unleashing one of the greatest floods on Earth. Traces of the flood's path and the effects of this event are still visible today.  23 min.
