Dr Shafer is an environmental biogeochemist where his research program addresses the cycling of metals, pathogens and emerging contaminants in aquatic, biologic, and atmospheric systems with a focus on the interface of environmental chemistry and human health. He coordinates laboratory initiatives for the Wisconsin Wastewater Surveillance Program and directs PFAS research activities at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene. His PFAS research program focusses on atmospheric cycling and deposition as well as fate of PFAS in wastewater treatment systems.
